Glossary of Terms

Vault

Vaulting requires speed, quickness, explosive power and reckless abandon.  Vaulting also requires precision; a score deduction is applied if the gymnast does not remain motionless upon landing.  A proper landing is called "sticking."  The vault itself is a singular movement combining the skills of running, tumbling and trampoline preparation.

Uneven Bars

Moves on the uneven bars include circles, giant swings, hand-stands, etc.  A complete routine consists of some 10 to 14 moves, mainly swinging and suspension skills utilizing both bars, with many changes and re-grasps.  The entire sequence of moves must flow in a continuous and uninterrupted manner.

Balance Beam

The balance beam is 16 feet long, four feet high and just four inches wide.  Exercises on the beam consist of dance elements like turns, pirouettes, jumps and leaps, and tumbling elements such as cartwheels, handsprings and somersaults.  Performing on the beam requires precise movement and intense concentration.  The routine last for about one and a half minutes.

Floor Exercise

Floor exercise is a combination of dance, tumbling and acrobatics performed to music.  The routines reflect qualities drawn from dramatic arts, but at the same time, retain the excitement of an athletic contest.  Floor exercise has become not only one of the most beautiful of athletic events, but one of the daring and exciting, as well.
